Slovak Studies

Slovak Studies at both Bachelor and a Master’s levels have been part of our Central European Studies programme since 2007. At the doctoral level, they are part of the PhD programmes in Slavic Philology and Slavic Literatures.

Our department is currently one of the two academic centres in the Czech Republic offering the study of the Slovak language and literature, the other being Masaryk University in Brno.

In addition to language and literature, Slovak Studies at our department place an equal emphasis on the teaching of Slovak political and cultural history with a special focus on Czech–Slovak relations.

The leading personalities of Slovak Studies at the Charles University include literary theorist and Slovakia’s ex-minister of culture Professor Rudolf Chmel, and prominent expert on Czech–Slovak language relations Professor Mira Nábělková.
